Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the art and science of getting your web page to be prominently displayed in organic search engine results, commonly referred to as the SERPs. Most often a site that is designed with SEO in mind will have content that is optimized to rank for specific keywords. The site must be created with clear and concise navigation and a reasonable load time. Original content must then created that does not show up anywhere else on the internet. This is one of the most important factors in getting favorable search engine rankings. The site must also be periodically updated with fresh content in order to maintain seach engine rankings. In general, older and larger sites, will rank better than new sites that do not have a lot of content.

In order for a new site to get search engine traffic, it is common practice to identify numerous long tail keywords that are not very competitive since it is unlikely that a site will rank well for high volume keywords that are highly competitive. By consistently creating content that is designed to rank for long tail keywords, a site can begin to build traffic and authority.

Links to Your Site

Getting other sites to link to your content has long been an important ranking factor, and this continues to be the case today. However, care must be taken in this linking strategy, since Google has really cracked down on sites that the perceive as using “unnatural” link building tactics. Certainly, under ideal circumstances, it is best to create such interesting and compelling content for your site, that site visitors are so enamored that they link to your content. Although, this does happen upon ocassion, in most instances it is still necessary to agressively create links to your site.

You can create links to your site by publishing articles, creating press releases and guest blogging on other sites that are relevant to your niche. There are numerous other ways to get good links to your site, but care must be taken if you choose to use of a paid link service, since Google has had a practice of de-indexing sites that use paid links.

Social Media Platforms

Another factor that figures prominently in the ranking of content on your site is the social media “buzz” that is associated with your site. Activity on social media platforms like Pinterest, Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn and StumbleUpon will also serve to increase your rankings in the SERPs. In addition, you are likely to receive some traffic directly from social media sites.

You first want to be sure that you are giving each of your posts a proper title. Consider how people may phrase the subject when they are trying to find it and then create your title from that knowledge. Your post title is very important to your SEO plan. The title will appear in the browser’s title bar as well as on your actual post page.

Providing your blog fresh content is also very important. You can try to include some of the popular search terms or phrases for the subject that you are posting within the post itself. Because search engines read text for content, try to keep actual text instead of images when possible. If you are using images try to give them text headings instead of graphic titles. The search engines will be able to read the text heading for content.

This will help your content to be recognized and categorized. Google can find your images, but it is done in a different way and they appear in an image search results not a text results. So you really want to title your images properly for good SEO.
